He gained a wide popularity with his horror stories and scientific romances. "The Purple Cloud" is one of his best known works and it remains popular today. It is considered to be the first future history series in science fiction and therefore Shiel is often described as the innovator of the genre.

He masterfully plays with a wide array of voices and accents and has since then produced over 500 audiobooks.
